Scores of people queued up to use a cash machine after it started giving out double money requested.

The cash machine, outside a Sainsbury’s store in Braham Road. Hull, attracted a big crowed hoping to take advantage of the fault, on Tuesday night. Police officers were eventually sent to guard the machine at supermarkets across the city. It is not yet known whether the customers will have to repay the cash or how much money was taken out.

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said. “officers were sent out and an attempt was made to contact the owners of the machine and officers remained at the scene to prevent more people from taking more money out.” The spokeswoman said those who benefited from the fault could be traced and face theft charge, but investigations would only take place if the operator made an complaint.

The cash machine is owned by a company called Payzone, a spokesman later confirmed. He said the fault was due to the machine being filled with the wrong denomination(面值)of notes. An investigation was under way into the incident and the machine had been taken out of service, he added.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter altogether.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic condition. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical example are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

53. According to the passage, troubles on the road are often caused by

         A. road conditions

         B. the speed of modern life

         C. the behavior of the drivers

         D. the large number of cars

         B. strict traffic rules are badly needed

         C. unskillful drivers should be punished

         D. drivers should show road politeness properly

55. The underlined word “give-and-take” in the passage means       .

         A. politeness and impoliteness

         B. good manners and bad manners

         C. offering help to others as much as possible

         D. willingness of each person to give in to each other’s wishes

56. What is the best title of the passage?

         A. Road Politeness

         B. Traffic Problems

         C. Bad Manners on the Road

         D. Good Drivers and Bad Drivers

Some children are natural-born bosses. They have a strong need to make decisions, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow. Stephen Jackson, a Year One student. “operates under the theory of what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine.” Says his mother. “The other day I bought two new Star Wars light sabers(). Later, I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brother was using the beat-up ones.”

“Examine the extended family, and you’ll probably find a bossy grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. It’s an inheritable trait.” Says Russell Barkley, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Other children who may not be particularly bossy can gradually gain dominance(支配地位) when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant, or in disagreement with each other.

Whether it’s inborn nature or developed character at work, too much control in the hands of the young isn’t healthy for children or the family. Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behavior, says family psychologist John Taylor. Children, he says in his book From Defiance to Cooperation, “have secret feelings of weakness” and “a desire to feel safe.” It’s the parents 3’ role to provide that protection.

When a “boss child” doesn’t learn limits at home, the stage is set for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly willful(固执)land unbending child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example, or trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your bossy ways.

“I see more and more parents giving up their power.” Says Barkly, who has studies bossy behavior for more than 30 years, “They bend too far because they don’t want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills. Their kids, in turn, feel more anxious.”

57. Bossy children like Stephen Jackson

         A. make good decisions

         B. show self-centeredness

         C. lack care from others

         D. have little sense of fear

58. The underlined phrase “inheritable trait” in Paragraph 2 means

         A. inborn nature

         B. developed character

         C. accepted theory

         D. particular environment

59. The study on bossy behavior implies that parents

         A. should give more power to their children

         B. should not set limits for their children

         C. should not be so anxious about their children

         D. should be strict with their children

60. What is the passage mainly about?

         A. How bossy behavior can be controlled

         B. How we can get along with bossy children

         C. What leads to children’s bossy behavior

         D. What we can do to stop children’s bossy behavior.
